INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP

I am a member of the recently established  "Internationalisation committee" lead by Prof Sulochini Pather, in my faculty, specifically responsible for  partnerships with HEIs abroad.

 

I form part of the task team that is responsible for the possible restructuring of programmes in our department, as well as strategic planning in the department. The goal is to add an Inclusive education stream in the coming years. 

 

Given the departure of several colleagues due to resignation or retirement and at times health-related absences within our already small department, we faced a prolonged period of operating with limited staffing. Consequently, there was a significant influx of new colleagues over the past few years. As one of the longest-serving members during this transition, I played a pivotal role in supporting the team. This included assisting with the utilisation of tools like Ikamva and MAS, as well as sharing resources I had developed during my time at UWC, during which I taught multiple modules within the department. 

 

As from the start of 2024 I was nominated to serve as a member of senate, as well as on the Senate Executive Committee. I aspire to advocate for academic excellence, student welfare, and institutional integrity. By actively participating in policy development, academic governance, and strategic planning, I aim to ensure that the university maintains high standards of education, fosters a supportive and inclusive environment for students and faculty, and remains a leader in higher education.

 

Since the beginning of 2023 I have served as the Chair of BEd Committee for the Senior phase (SP) and FET phase. In collaboration with members and administrative staff we have successfully completed three first-year orientation sessions. As the chair, I also form part of the Teaching Practice working group where I, in collaboration with the Teaching practice office, revised and updated the lesson plan as well as assessment tool for third and fourth year SP and FET phase education students in 2024. This revision aims to improve the teaching practice procedures and enhance the overall practicum experience. I am very proud that I was mainly responsible for yet another revision of the tool in 2025. This time around I proposed that the tool be piloted, which myself and one other colleague completed. I believe that the consequent updated tool will afford opportunities to complete teaching practice evaluation in a more efficient manner.

 

Together with Dr Susann Louw I was part of a seminar presentation on 4 March 2025 on the topic of AI in higher education, specifically regarding the impact it has on supervision and other submissions of academic work. The topic of their presentation was "The responsible use of AI". We explored "Responsible use of AI", sparking insightful conversations on the integration of AI in postgraduate supervision. We also proposed a working draft AI policy to members of the faculty. 

I am a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessor. RPL provides a way for the university to recognise knowledge and skills gained through experience for non-formal education, for the purpose of admission or for credit towards qualification (UWC website).
